Be Prepared for The 2017 Spring Spawn
As the ice fishing season comes to a close we all are eagerly waiting for spring time fishing. Where the bites will be plentiful and we can spend more time outdoors with our “fair weather” fellow fishermen. Between the Crappie, and trout its a tough decision which one to target. I often find myself targeting the trout since they are in limited supply because in a few weeks after the trout are all harvested from the lakes. The Spring Spawn hits. I have a few of my favorite spots to target and one of them produces not just crappie but walleye and other pan fish. So needless to say its my go to spot as soon as the weather heats up.

Tip#1 Travel light and be able to rush to your favorite spot if necessary
Since this is the time of the year when fellow anglers are aware the fishing is plentiful and a bit easier you’ll find your favorite spots often overcrowded and busy. Tip #2 Bring several sources of bait/jigs
One thing that can surely help you land more fish is by bringing several options for your bait/ jigs. I cannot remember the name but I call them Mike Warren specials. Just look for the curly Chartreuse tail and blue and black jig head. This is my go to jig along with using a small bobber. Give them a try.
Road Runner Jig head
I don’t know if its the color or the blade that creates buzz underwater but this jig head is excellent and always does well. However they are very expensive at nearly $1 per jig you hate to get stuck on stub! So take extra time to tie a great knot so you can retrieve it if it does get stuck.
Tip #3 Wear repellant!
I can’t tell you how many times I have ventured deep into the woods in search of the literal honey hole. Or I sink into a big fish and start walking it down the banks to land him. You’ll often find yourself in areas where the brush is high and ticks jump HIGH! Just last year I was in a excellent spot and looked down after feeling something crawling on me only to notice nearly 5 ticks crawling up my leg. Had I taken the time to spray some repellant instead of leaving that excellent spot. I could have kept fishing while we love fishing and want to land fish. Don’t jeopardize your health for a catch. Protect yourself and spray some repellant BEFORE you get to your spot.
Tip #4 Keep your special spots secret
We all have a few go to spots you know the ones where you have been successful catching fish ever year. I recently learned this the hard way. I took a fellow fishermen to several of my favorite spots ones that took me years to find with the understanding that he would NOT tell anyone! After catching a slew of fish and letting him in on my “secret spots” I look on FB only to see him bragging about catching fish with another friend of his. Since then that spot has never been the same. Every time I take the 20 min hike into the woods at spring spawn I find people there. Where previously for YEARS no one would ever be there. So there’s nothing wrong with sharing with fellow anglers but save something special for yourself.

Spring spawn is near
Spring is fastly approaching and anglers will be hitting the banks with the intent to land some fish. After spending the entire winter for most of us not fishing we are eagerly waitting for nice weather. When most of our target species will begin spawning.
I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to landing some crappie, trout and catfish this spring. However the old way of fishing usually leaves me tired and exhausted after a great day of fishing. I dread the walk back to the car and hope I don’t make a cast in a unproductive spot. Grab the thick juicy part of the worm and place it at the bottom. By:

After eagerly waiting for the start of trout season its finally here. The kids were geared up and ready to hit the water. They had their Fishing Caddy Mini’s ready and poles in hand. It was really easy to get them setup.
Step 1.

Fall Crappie Tips
Catching Crappie in the fall can be fun and exciting but it does take some patience and ability to find the fish.
Tip#1
Use a bobber to test depth.
Often times you may need to adjust the height of the bobber to reach the fish.
I recommend going shallow first and adjusting down from there a little at a time. Change the depth slightly each time. Do this a few times and if there are fish there you will certainly find them.
Tip#2
Use scents.
One of my favorite scents to use is the Berkeley Crappie Nibbles. These are awesome and most certainly will help you find more fish. Add one on the end of your jig and keep casting and adjusting the bobber to reach the fish. If you don’t have success within the 1st 15 or so casts it may be time to move to another spot.
Tip#3
Look for the honeyholes.
Find areas that are not fished often. On top of bridges in back channels deep in the woods.
Some of the largest crappie I have caught have come from fishing off the top of bridges. It provides the perfect angle and with a few adjustments I find them rather easy.
Tip#4
Sounds simple but reel slow.
If you reel your rod too fast often times you’ll zip right past the fish. Get used to reeling slowly at a consistent pace to locate the fish. Often times they will pass on your presentation on the first go around and bite on the second or third pass. So be patient and reel slow and stop often. This causes the fish to strike if they are in the area. Very effective to detect if there is fish in that area. Do this a few times and if you don’t get a bite move to a different spot.

Here are a few Tips: How to catch trout.
The type of pole/rod you use is very important. You should use a light weight or ultra light pole. The reason for this is simple. Trout can tell if there is resistance on the other end of the line. So if you have a heavy pole its is likely that you will miss bites often. When the fish take your bait you want to be able to feel the bites and also see them and if your pole is too heavy you will not accomplish either one.
Bait: There are many different types of bait you can use to catch rainbow trout. However there are only two that I have found to be extremely effective.
Turbo Powerbait Rainbow.
Worm Night Crawler. With a syringe pump air into the top section and the bottom section.
IMPORTANT:Check the worm and make sure it floats in the water without help.
Tackle:
Max Test line of 4-6 lbs anything more than that the trout will see your lines and not take your bait.
Hook: #1 size bait holder hook or treble hook.
